Nowhere is competition more evident in the plant world than among those vegetables that grow heavenwards. It is very obvious with runner beans and climbing French beans, which seem to wind their way up at a fantastic pace in their quest to reach the top of their canes before their neighbours. On every visit to the plot they always seem so much taller than the previous time.

But in their race to reach the sky some lose their grip, and you find their leading shoot is flapping in the breeze frantically trying to regain its hold. This is when they need a hand. Simply twirl it back around the stick, but take note: the runner bean twines anti-clockwise, and any attempt to make it do otherwise causes confusion and it will soon be back waving in the wind again, only this time quite a bit longer. Everything in nature has little quirks – like ourselves, when you think about it.
